Florida State at Georgia Tech
ATLANTA (Interstat) -- The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets scored three runs in a chaotic sixth inning to erase a two-run deficit and held on to defeat the Florida State Seminoles 4-3 on Thursday night at Russ Chandler Stadium.
The comeback victory improved Georgia Tech’s record to 26-5 overall, while 12th-ranked Florida State fell to 24-9.
The game’s decisive sequence began in the bottom of the sixth with Florida State leading 3-1. Seminoles starter Wes Mendes, who had been dominant with nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 hitless innings, finally faltered. After striking out Drew Schmidt to open the frame, Mendes allowed a single to Matthew Zuckerman and a single to Will Baker, ending his night.
Reliever John Abraham entered and immediately committed a balk, advancing both runners into scoring position. Carson Kerce then delivered a crucial RBI single to shortstop, scoring Zuckerman to cut the lead to 3-2. On the next pitch, a wild pitch from Abraham allowed Baker to score the tying run and Kerce to advance to third. After a strikeout, Jackson Burress slapped an RBI single into shallow right field, plating Kerce with the go-ahead run.
That outburst made a winner of Georgia Tech starter Tate McKee, the top star for the Yellow Jackets. McKee worked six innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven. He weathered a difficult second inning where Florida State built its early lead.
In that inning, McKee walked Ben Putnam and allowed a single to Dylan Will. After Will was caught stealing, John Stuetzer singled home Putnam. Cal Fisher followed with a two-run homer to left field, staking the Seminoles to a 3-0 advantage.
Georgia Tech got one run back in the bottom of the second when Baker launched a solo home run to deep right field off Mendes. That was the only damage against the Florida State left-hander until the sixth-inning rally.
Mason Patel secured the win for Georgia Tech with three scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits to earn the save. He worked out of a jam in the ninth to preserve the lead.
Florida State threatened in its final at-bat. Will and Stuetzer led off with back-to-back singles off Patel and executed a double steal to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with no outs. But Patel induced a ground ball from Fisher that resulted in a rare 1-2-5 pitcher-to-catcher-to-third baseman double play, nailing Will at the plate. Patel then got the final out to end the game.
Fisher finished 1 for 3 with the two-run homer for Florida State. Stuetzer was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Baker led Georgia Tech’s 10-hit attack, going 2 for 3 with the home run, while Kerce was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The most important part of the game was the bottom of the sixth inning, where Georgia Tech sent nine men to the plate. The inning featured a pitching change, a balk, a wild pitch, three singles and a walk, transforming a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead in a span of six batters against the Florida State bullpen.
The teams continue their three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series Friday at Russ Chandler Stadium.
