CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (Interstat) — The Northeastern Huskies look to continue their winning momentum against the struggling Harvard Crimson in a non-conference matchup Wednesday.
First pitch is scheduled for the evening at Harvard’s baseball facility.
Northeastern (16-14) enters having won two of its last three, including a dominant 13-1, eight-inning victory over Monmouth on Saturday. The Huskies’ offense erupted for 13 runs on 12 hits in that win, led by Matt Brinker and Cooper Tarantino, who each homered and drove in three runs.
Harvard (5-16) snapped a four-game skid with a 2-1 win over Brown on Saturday, backed by a strong pitching performance from Gio Colasante, who allowed one run over seven innings. The Crimson have found wins scarce this season.
A key matchup will feature two capable starting pitchers. Northeastern is expected to send right-hander Ryan Griffin to the mound. Griffin is coming off a stellar outing against Monmouth, where he struck out nine and allowed just two hits over six innings. In his last four appearances, he has a 2.65 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 20 2/3 innings.
Harvard will likely counter with right-hander Andrew Abler. Abler has been a bright spot despite the team’s record, delivering several quality starts. He took a hard-luck loss against Brown last Friday, allowing two earned runs on just two hits over 6 1/3 innings. In a win over Cornell on March 30, he threw six scoreless innings.
The Huskies have shown a potent offense at times, averaging over seven runs per game in their last three wins. Harvard’s pitching staff will need to contain a Northeastern lineup that has scored 10 or more runs six times this season.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the contest projects to be close, with a predicted final score of Northeastern 5, Harvard 4.
Following this game, Northeastern begins a four-game homestand against Merrimack and Maine starting Friday. Harvard opens Ivy League play with a three-game series at Yale beginning Saturday.
