MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Youngstown State scored early and held off Milwaukee for a 7-4 victory Friday in the opener of a doubleheader.

The Penguins plated five runs in the first two innings and never trailed. Brady Shannon homered and drove in two runs, while Nathan Beckley added two RBIs. Jack Messmore earned the win for Youngstown State, allowing four earned runs over 6 1/3 innings despite surrendering 10 hits.

Milwaukee’s Bradyn Horn provided a two-run double in the first inning, but the Panthers’ rally stalled. Youngstown State relievers Sloan Ulrich, Brevin Smith and Banks Cox combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings to secure the win.

Both teams’ records moved to 5-23.
