LORMAN, Miss. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum will conclude a three-game series when the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils visit the Alcorn State Braves on Thursday afternoon.
The Delta Devils (9-17) have taken the first two games of the midweek set, including a 6-5, 10-inning victory on Wednesday. Mississippi Valley State has won four of its last five games.
Alcorn State (2-24) looks to avoid a series sweep and snap a five-game losing skid. The Braves’ struggles have been pronounced, having allowed 15 runs in each of the series’ first two contests.
A key player for Mississippi Valley State is Luke Richard, who started on the mound in Wednesday’s narrow win. He pitched seven innings, allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts. In his previous start on March 27, he threw a complete game, allowing one earned run with eight strikeouts in a 2-1, 10-inning victory over Alabama A&M.
For Alcorn State, Jacob Wingard is a pitcher to watch. He took the loss in Wednesday’s opener, pitching five innings and allowing one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts.
The teams have recent history of high-scoring affairs, with the Delta Devils winning 15-8 in the second game of Wednesday’s doubleheader and 15-7 when the teams met last on March 1.
Following Thursday’s contest, Mississippi Valley State will travel to face Louisiana-Monroe on April 7. Alcorn State is scheduled to visit Mississippi on the same date.
