Texas Christian at Dallas Baptist

FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — Sawyer Strosnider’s three-run homer in the seventh inning broke open a tight game and propelled Texas Christian to an 11-5 victory over Dallas Baptist on Tuesday night at Horner Ballpark.

The Horned Frogs (14-10) used a six-run seventh and a three-run ninth to pull away from the Patriots (14-11) in a midweek non-conference clash that was closer than the final score indicated for much of the evening.

TCU led 3-2 after a first inning that saw both teams strike early. The Horned Frogs scratched across a run in the top half on an RBI single by Chase Brunson, scoring Colton Griffin, who had been hit by a pitch. Dallas Baptist answered immediately in the bottom of the frame when Ben Tryon launched a solo home run to right field. Jake Ben followed with a double and later scored on a Cooper Neville groundout.

The Patriots trimmed the lead to 3-2 in the third when Ben singled home Tryon, who had doubled. The score remained 3-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when Dallas Baptist mounted its biggest threat. Chayton Krauss doubled and, after a walk and a fielder’s choice, Luke Pettitte delivered a two-run double down the left-field line to give the Patriots a 5-3 advantage.

The lead was short-lived. TCU responded explosively in the top of the seventh against the Dallas Baptist bullpen. With one out and two runners on via a walk and an error, Griffin singled up the middle to score one run. After a popout, Strosnider stepped to the plate and launched a three-run shot to right-center field, turning the one-run deficit into a 7-5 TCU lead.

Strosnider, the Horned Frogs’ top star, finished 1-for-3 with the home run and four RBIs, providing the game’s pivotal swing. His blast ignited the TCU offense, which added a run in the eighth on a Cole Cramer bases-loaded walk and three more in the ninth on a two-run homer by Jack Bell and an RBI single by Cramer.

While the offenses found traction late, pitching dominated long stretches. TCU relievers Nate Stern, Tanner Sagouspe and Tyler Phenow combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out six. Stern entered in the third and threw 2 2/3 hitless frames with three strikeouts. Sagouspe earned the win with three perfect innings of relief, striking out two. Phenow recorded two key outs in the sixth to strand a runner.

For Dallas Baptist, reliever Aiden VanDeHatert was sharp, tossing 2 2/3 hitless innings with three strikeouts after entering in the fourth. Starter Jerrod Jenkins went 3 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.

Bell joined Strosnider with a multi-RBI night for TCU, going 2-for-4 with the two-run homer and a walk. Griffin scored three runs, while Cramer drove in two. For Dallas Baptist, Tryon was 2-for-5 with the homer and Pettitte drove in two runs on his sixth-inning double.

The win moves TCU above .500 on the season as it prepares to open a Big 12 series at home against Texas Tech on Friday. Dallas Baptist will look to rebound when it begins a Missouri Valley Conference series at home against Missouri State, also on Friday.
