Lipscomb at Belmont
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Cody Underwood and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout through eight innings as the Lipscomb Bisons defeated the Belmont Bruins 4-1 in nonconference baseball Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park.
Underwood, named the top star for Lipscomb, delivered a dominant performance, pitching five no-hit innings before exiting. He allowed one earned run, walked two and struck out two. The lone blemish was a solo home run by Belmont’s Michael Sprockett in the fourth inning, which accounted for the Bruins’ only run. Underwood’s outing marked a strong rebound from his previous appearance on March 15, when he allowed two hits in two innings of relief against North Alabama.
The Bisons’ offense provided steady support, racking up 10 hits. Center fielder Hutson Miles led the way, going 3 for 4 with a double. Third baseman Cam Pruitt drove in two runs, including a crucial two-out, RBI single in the sixth inning that scored Aaron Stelogeannis, who had reached on an error.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the eighth inning, which effectively sealed the victory for Lipscomb. With a 3-1 lead, Stelogeannis led off with a double against reliever Krish Gandhi. After a groundout moved him to third, Stelogeannis scored on a wild pitch, providing a critical insurance run and extending the lead to 4-1.
Following Underwood, reliever Mack Mabrey was perfect over three innings, facing the minimum nine batters. Kaleb Kantola then worked a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.
For Belmont, starter Andrew Perry took the loss after allowing two earned runs on four hits over four innings. He struck out six. Sam Heyman, Krish Gandhi and Jonathon Van Ness followed in relief. Sprockett’s home run in the fourth was the highlight for the Bruins, who managed just three hits total—a solo homer, a single and a double.
The Bisons improved to .500 at 11-11 with the win, while the Bruins fell to 8-17. Lipscomb has now won both meetings between the intracity rivals this season, having also defeated Belmont 8-2 on Feb. 24.
Lipscomb next opens a three-game series at home against Eastern Kentucky starting Friday. Belmont will host Illinois-Chicago for a three-game set beginning the same day.
