Sacred Heart at Bryant
ORONO, Maine (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth contest defined by offensive outbursts and defensive miscues, the Bryant Bulldogs outlasted the Sacred Heart Pioneers 14-11 on Saturday at Mahaney Diamond. The game, part of a weekend series moved to a neutral site, saw Bryant overcome an early eight-run deficit and withstand a late Sacred Heart rally to secure the victory.
The most important part of the game unfolded in the bottom of the fourth inning, where Bryant transformed the contest. Trailing 11-3 after the Pioneers exploded for seven runs in the top of the third, the Bulldogs capitalized on a critical Sacred Heart error to ignite a six-run frame, all unearned. The inning began with Casey Wensley reaching on a fielding error by the first baseman. After a sacrifice bunt and a lineout, Mike Fiatarone delivered a two-run single to center, cutting the deficit to 11-7. The next batter, Hudson Story, then provided the pivotal swing, launching a two-run home run down the right field line to bring Bryant within two runs. The inning completely shifted momentum, turning a potential blowout into a tight game.
Bryant completed the comeback an inning later. Wensley reached on another Pioneers error, this time by the second baseman, and scored on an RBI triple by Ellis Garcia. Garcia then came home on Hunter Kingsbury’s sacrifice fly, tying the game at 11. The Bulldogs took their first lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI fielder’s choice by Carlos Irizarry, scoring Justin Hackett.
Sacred Heart refused to go quietly, mounting a serious challenge in the top of the seventh. They loaded the bases against reliever Thomas Galusha and pushed across a run on an RBI single by Gavin Donohue. After a pitching change, CJ Nolan greeted Bryant’s Tommy Flaherty with a two-run double, and Ryan Rey followed with another two-run double, plating three runs total in the inning to reclaim a 14-12 lead for the Pioneers.
Bryant had the final answer, however, in the home half of the seventh. Again, a Sacred Heart error proved costly. With a runner on first, a throwing error by the catcher on a stolen base attempt allowed Gavin Greger to take third. Fiatarone walked, and Story came through again with an RBI single. Hackett then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Fiatarone with what would stand as the final run. Flaherty and Christian Trantino then combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless, hitless relief to seal it, with Flaherty earning the win after his key 2 1/3-inning stint.
Story was the standout performer for Bryant, breaking out of a recent slump in dramatic fashion. After going hitless in his previous two games, the first baseman went 3 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and two walks, driving in crucial runs during both the fourth-inning rally and the seventh-inning go-ahead push. Aidan Vining provided critical stability for Bryant’s bullpen, throwing 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on three hits while striking out five.
For Sacred Heart, Ryan Rey led the offense, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Nolan added two hits and two RBIs. Pioneers reliever PJ Rogan was effective in a long-relief role, tossing 3 1/3 hitless innings, though he was charged with two unearned runs.
Defense was a deciding factor, as Sacred Heart committed four errors leading to six unearned runs for Bryant. The Bulldogs executed three sacrifice flies in the game.
With the win, Bryant improved to 12-8 on the season and secured the series victory after winning 11-1 on Friday. Sacred Heart fell to 4-14 with the loss. The Bulldogs next travel to face Rhode Island on Wednesday. The Pioneers return home to host New Haven on Tuesday.
