Tennessee-Martin at Southern Illinois
CARBONDALE, Ill. (Interstat) — The Southern Illinois Salukis and Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks will look to steady their seasons when they meet in a nonconference midweek game Wednesday at Abe Martin Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature near 34 degrees.
Both teams enter with losing records. The Salukis (8-10) are looking to rebound after a 6-3 loss to Southern Indiana on Saturday. The Skyhawks (7-9) aim to snap a two-game skid after dropping two of three to The Citadel, including an 8-4 defeat Sunday.
A player to watch for Tennessee-Martin is third baseman Cameron Greene. He is coming off a 3-for-4 performance with a home run and two RBIs in Sunday’s loss. Over his last 10 games, Greene is batting .300 (9-for-30) with two homers and six RBIs.
Southern Illinois will counter with right-hander Meade Johnson, who is expected to start on the mound. Johnson pitched five scoreless innings of relief in a 7-4 win over Southern Indiana on Saturday, allowing five hits and striking out three. His previous outing was a rough one, yielding five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings against UNLV on March 7.
The Salukis have shown power recently, scoring 10 runs in a win over Southern Indiana on March 13. The Skyhawks’ offense has been inconsistent, scoring 22 total runs in their last five games but being held to three or fewer runs in three of them.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Southern Illinois 6, Tennessee-Martin 5.
This is the first of a home-and-home set between the teams. They will meet again next Tuesday, March 24, in Martin, Tennessee.
Southern Illinois opens a three-game series at Illinois-Chicago on Friday. Tennessee-Martin begins Ohio Valley Conference play at Southeast Missouri State on Friday.
