Wofford at Belmont
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Ben Timblin broke out of a slump in emphatic fashion, driving in five runs with a home run and three hits as the Wofford Terriers dominated the Belmont Bruins 11-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
The Terriers, who improved to 10-5, set the tone immediately against Belmont starter Lake Morris. After two quick outs in the first inning, Logan Tribble singled to set the stage for Timblin. The left fielder, who was just 2 for 12 over his previous four games, launched a two-run homer to give Wofford a lead it would never relinquish.
Wofford starter Branton Little was dominant, carrying a no-hit bid into the third inning. The right-hander pitched five strong innings, allowing one run on just two hits while striking out three to earn the win. The lone blemish was a solo home run by Belmont shortstop Cavan McMeans in the bottom of the third, which accounted for the Bruins’ only run. McMeans finished 2 for 2.
The Terriers extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning against reliever Zane Brown. Cade Collins walked, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Niko Brini. After a sacrifice bunt moved Brini to third, Timblin drove him in with a fielder’s choice. Timblin then stole second and scored on an RBI single from Hunter Herndon.
Wofford added another run in the fifth when Brini tripled and scored on Timblin’s third RBI of the day, a single to left field. The Terriers broke the game open with a four-run seventh inning, capitalizing on a Belmont error. James Layman was hit by a pitch and scored when Collins doubled and advanced to third on a misplay by the right fielder. Brini followed with his second RBI double of the game, making it 7-1.
Timblin continued his big day, driving in Brini with a single for his fifth RBI. After a walk and a double steal put runners on second and third, Herndon delivered another run-scoring single. Pinch-hitter Brady Gold capped the rally with a sacrifice bunt to plate the final run.
Brini complemented Timblin’s performance perfectly, going 3 for 4 with a triple, two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Herndon also had two hits and two RBIs for Wofford, which collected 11 hits and executed three sacrifice bunts.
Belmont, which fell to 6-10, managed just six hits. Starter Lake Morris took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in two innings of work. Relievers Zane Brown and Owen Marsh combined to allow nine runs over the next four innings before Ridge Harvey recorded the final out of the seventh.
Press Fitzpatrick closed out the game for Wofford with two perfect innings of relief, striking out one.
The most important part of the game was the immediate offensive statement by Wofford, punctuated by Timblin’s first-inning home run. It provided early run support for Little and set a commanding tone against a Belmont team that had played them close just two days prior. That early lead allowed the Terriers to play aggressively, utilizing sacrifices and stolen bases to steadily build an insurmountable advantage while their pitching staff stifled the Bruins’ lineup.
The teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Sunday.
