Screaming Eagles Soar Past Penguins in Doubleheader Opener

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Interstat) — Southern Indiana erupted for six runs in the eighth inning to break open a close game and defeat Youngstown State 10-1 on Sunday in the opener of a doubleheader.

The Penguins took a brief 1-0 lead in the third, but the Screaming Eagles answered with two in the second and two more in the fourth. The game remained 4-1 until Southern Indiana sent 11 batters to the plate in the decisive eighth, capitalizing on two Youngstown State errors to score six unearned runs.

Drue Saenz led Southern Indiana with four RBIs, including a two-run triple. Winning pitcher Ryan Weller allowed one run over five innings. Youngstown State’s Jack Messmore took the loss despite a quality start, allowing two unearned runs over six innings. The Penguins grounded into two double plays and managed just six hits.
