Wofford at Belmont
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — Charlie Davis and Michael Sprockett hit solo home runs and three Belmont pitchers combined on a six-hitter as the Bruins edged the Wofford Terriers 3-2 on Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Bruins, who improved to 6-10, rallied from an early two-run deficit to snap a two-game skid and even the weekend series after dropping an 11-8 decision to the Terriers on Friday. Wofford fell to 10-5.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning, transforming a tied contest into a Belmont lead it would not relinquish. After Brody Langlotz struck out, Sprockett, the Belmont catcher, connected for a go-ahead homer to break a 2-2 deadlock. The following batter, JD Whitworth, worked a walk, which prompted Wofford to relieve starter Alec Bouchard with Hiram Lewis. Whitworth then stole second, but Lewis escaped further damage by getting Isaac VanderWoude to fly out and, after an intentional walk, retiring Davis on a fly ball to right field.
Wofford struck quickly in the first inning against Belmont starter Owen Cavey. Cade Collins led off with a double and scored on Niko Brini’s bunt single, which was compounded by a Belmont throwing error. Brini later scored on Hunter Herndon’s sacrifice fly to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead before Cavey recorded an out.
Belmont answered with an unearned run in its half of the first against Wofford’s Bouchard. Charlie Davis reached on an error, stole second and scored on Jake Maddox’s RBI double.
The game then evolved into a pitchers’ duel. Cavey settled in after the rocky first, allowing just one more hit over his five innings of work. He finished with five strikeouts and one earned run. Bouchard was equally effective for Wofford, carrying a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings and striking out seven. However, Davis ended the no-hit bid and tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Mckale Stevenson relieved Cavey and earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief for Belmont, allowing just one hit. Bouchard took the hard-luck loss for Wofford, charged with three runs, two earned, on four hits over 5 1/3 innings. Lewis recorded the final two outs of the sixth without allowing a hit.
Wofford managed six hits, with Brini and Logan Tribble each collecting two. Belmont’s four hits included the crucial homers from Davis and Sprockett and two hits from Maddox.
The Terriers threatened in the sixth when Ben Timblin singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but he was picked off by Stevenson. Wofford went down in order in the seventh against Stevenson to end the game.
Belmont’s victory sets up a decisive rubber match in the second game of Sunday’s doubleheader. Wofford will continue its road swing with a midweek game against South Carolina Upstate on Tuesday. Belmont travels to face Tennessee Tech on Wednesday.
