Stanford at Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Interstat) — Luke Costello launched two home runs and drove in five runs, powering Wake Forest to a 14-10 victory over Stanford in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at Gene Hooks Field at Wake Forest Baseball Park.

The Demon Deacons (15-1) overcame an early four-run deficit with a five-run first inning and outslugged the Cardinal (5-10) in a game that featured seven combined home runs. Costello’s second blast, a two-run shot to left-center in the eighth inning, provided critical insurance runs.

Stanford struck first when Jimmy Bates hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Wake Forest answered emphatically in the bottom half, sending 13 batters to the plate against Stanford starter Derek Warner and reliever Andrew Shaw. The Demon Deacons scored five runs on four hits, two walks, two hit batters and a sacrifice fly, taking a 5-1 lead. Nick Lewis and Marek Houston had RBI singles, while Jack Winnay was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run.

The Cardinal chipped away in the second. Eric Jeon scored on a single by Trey Sasaki, and another run came home on an error by Wake Forest third baseman Dalton Wentz, cutting the lead to 5-3.

Jeon then gave Stanford a brief lead in the third inning. After Owen Lavin reached on an error and advanced to third, Jeon hit a two-run homer to deep left field, putting the Cardinal ahead 6-5.

The back-and-forth affair continued in the bottom of the third. Wake Forest reclaimed the lead with four runs. Lewis drove in a run with a groundout, Wentz added a sacrifice fly, and Costello capped the inning with a two-run homer to left, making it 9-6.

Stanford’s Teddy Tokheim countered with a two-run homer in the fourth, pulling the Cardinal within a run at 9-8. Jeon tied the game in the fifth with his second solo home run of the day, a deep shot to left field.

Wake Forest went back ahead in the fifth on an RBI double from Wentz that scored Lewis, making it 10-9. Stanford tied it again in the seventh on a solo homer by Braden Ketelsen.

The Demon Deacons took the lead for good in the seventh on a solo home run by Javar Williams to right field, making it 11-10. The most important sequence of the game came in the eighth inning. After Wentz singled and advanced on a wild pitch, Costello hit his second two-run homer of the day to extend the lead to 13-10. Wake Forest added another run later in the inning on an RBI single by Cameron Stein.

Stanford loaded the bases with one out in the eighth but managed only one run on a bases-loaded walk by Lavin, leaving the tying runs on base. Wake Forest reliever Cam Bagwell pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the win.

Costello finished 3 for 4 with five RBIs. Wentz added three hits and two RBIs for Wake Forest. Jeon led Stanford, going 3 for 5 with two homers and three RBIs. Tokheim had two hits, including a home run, and drove in two.

Stanford used seven pitchers in the loss. Wake Forest starter Josh Marsten allowed eight runs, six earned, over three-plus innings. Reliever Troy Dressler (1-0) earned the win, allowing two runs over 2 2/3 innings. Bagwell earned his first save.

The game was the opener of a doubleheader. The teams were scheduled to play again Saturday afternoon.
