Costello, Keenan Power Wake Forest Past Stanford in Doubleheader Opener
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (Interstat) — Luke Costello’s fourth-inning grand slam keyed a massive rally as Wake Forest erased an early eight-run deficit to defeat Stanford 12-9 on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader at Gene Hooks Field.
The Demon Deacons (15-1) trailed 9-1 after the top of the third inning but stormed back with an eight-run fourth. Costello’s blast to deep center, his fourth homer of the season, drove in four and made it 9-7. Jimmy Keenan followed two batters later with a two-run shot to tie it. Wake Forest took the lead for good in the fifth on Matt Conte’s two-run single.
Chris Levonas earned the win for Wake Forest, striking out eight over five innings. Stanford (5-10) got a two-run homer from Charlie Bates and two scoreless relief innings from Cohen Gomez but could not hold the large early advantage.
