Pineau, Bluejays Edge Bulldogs in Doubleheader Opener
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Jack Pineau and Zachary Bowman dueled in a tense pitchers’ battle Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse, but Ben North’s fourth-inning home run proved the difference as Creighton edged Gonzaga 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Pineau earned the win for Creighton, allowing just four hits over six scoreless innings with six strikeouts. North broke a 1-1 tie with his solo shot to left center. Gonzaga’s Bowman was the hard-luck loser, pitching eight strong innings and allowing only two runs on four hits while striking out six. The Bulldogs’ lone run came on Ryder Young’s eighth-inning homer.
Creighton improved to 4-7 overall. Gonzaga fell to 4-8.
