Fairfield at Siena
ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — Brendon Miller delivered a dominant seven-inning start and Luke Nomura launched a three-run homer during a decisive sixth-inning outburst as the Fairfield Stags snapped a four-game skid with a 12-3 victory over the Siena Saints in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball Saturday at Siena Baseball Field.
The game, which began in the afternoon and concluded in the evening, saw the Stags (2-9, 1-2 MAAC) break open a tight contest with a six-run sixth inning, avenging two one-run losses to the Saints (5-8, 2-1) the previous day.
Miller, the top star for Fairfield, was instrumental in the win. After allowing three runs in the third inning, the right-hander settled in powerfully, finishing his outing with seven innings pitched, allowing no hits after the third, three earned runs, and five strikeouts. He retired the final 13 batters he faced.
The game was a 3-3 deadlock entering the sixth, with Siena having erased an early Fairfield lead. The Stags had scored two unearned runs in the second on bases-loaded walks by Zach Stephenson and TJ Schmalzle. Siena answered in the third, stringing together three hits, including an RBI single from Vincent Venditti and a run-scoring hit from Danny Bergamotto. Bergamotto later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Fairfield reclaimed the lead in the fifth on an RBI single from Dean Bucciero and a run-scoring double from JP Kuczik, making it 5-3. The most important part of the game came in the top of the sixth, which blew the game open. With one out and two on, Stephenson singled home a run. After a pitching change, Schmalzle drove in another with a single. Nomura then followed by crushing a three-run home run to left-center field, extending the Fairfield lead to 10-3 and effectively sealing the outcome.
The Stags added single runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Schmalzle finished with two hits and three RBIs, while Stephenson and Nomura each drove in two runs. Nomura’s four RBIs led the team.
Despite the lopsided final score, both teams collected seven hits. Siena starter Ryan Taffe was effective over three scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out four. Reliever Matt Murtagh struck out four in 2 1/3 innings but was charged with one run.
For Siena, Venditti went 2 for 4 with an RBI. After Miller’s departure, Fairfield relievers Nick Kelly and Jack Sheldon each pitched a perfect inning to close out the win.
The victory marked a significant turnaround for Fairfield, which entered the game with a 1-9 record and had lost several close contests, including the two narrow defeats to Siena to open the series. According to Interstat’s ELO system, Fairfield had an 81.60 percent probability to win the game.
Fairfield next plays at Saint John’s on Tuesday. Siena travels to face Stony Brook on Tuesday.
