Brown Edges Rhode Island in Game 1 of Doubleheader

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (Interstat) — Christian Butera and Alex Benevento hit back-to-back home runs to lift Brown to a 3-2 victory over Rhode Island in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Murray Stadium.

The Bears erased an early two-run deficit. Butera’s two-run homer in the second inning tied it before Benevento’s solo shot in the fifth provided the decisive run. Brown starter Peter Dubie earned the win, striking out nine and allowing one earned run over five strong innings.

Rams starter Joe Sabbath took the loss, issuing seven walks that led to three runs despite not allowing a hit over five innings. Sam Houchens provided three perfect innings of relief for Rhode Island. Jack Hopko and Reece Moroney drove in runs for the Rams.

Brown improved to 3-5. Rhode Island fell to 0-12.
