Oakland at Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — Shane Sdao delivered seven strong innings and Caden Sorrell’s three-run homer erased an early deficit as Texas A&M rallied past Oakland 6-3 on Friday in the first game of a doubleheader at Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
The Aggies (13-1), playing as the nation’s top-ranked team, shook off a slow start to extend their winning streak to four games. The Golden Grizzlies (1-13) scored all their runs in the second inning but could not sustain the offense against Sdao and the Texas A&M bullpen.
Oakland struck first against Sdao in the second. Brandon Hain led off the frame with a solo home run to left-center field. The Golden Grizzlies then loaded the bases with one out on a single by Marco Konopiots and walks to Sam Lux and Carter Clark. After a fly out, Aidan Schuck delivered a two-out, two-run single to right field, scoring Lux and Konopiots for a 3-0 lead.
The advantage was short-lived. Texas A&M answered decisively in the bottom of the third against Oakland starter Jordan Dahlof. With one out, Jack Harrison was hit by a pitch and Jace Kiel II singled. Sorrell then launched a 1-0 pitch over the center field wall for a three-run homer, tying the game.
The Aggies took the lead for good in the fifth. Dahlof issued a one-out single to Kiel II and a walk to Sorrell, ending his outing. Reliever Owen Thomson entered and gave up a two-run double to Gavin Grahovac that scored both runners, putting Texas A&M ahead 5-3.
Texas A&M added an unearned insurance run in the sixth. With Andrew Landis on in relief, Ali Partida walked, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and a fly out, and scored on a two-out fielding error by Oakland second baseman Hain.
That was more than enough for Sdao (2-0), who settled in brilliantly after the rocky second. The left-hander allowed four hits and three runs over seven innings, walking one and striking out eight. He retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced, including the last eight in order.
The Golden Grizzlies managed just two hits over the final seven innings. Juan Vargas worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief for the Aggies, and Clayton Freshcorn recorded the final out of the ninth for his first save.
Schuck finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs for Oakland. Konopiots had two of the team’s six hits. Dahlof (0-2) took the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Sorrell’s go-ahead homer was the game’s pivotal moment, transforming a three-run deficit into a tie game and shifting all momentum to the home side. His three RBIs led all hitters.
The announced attendance was 4,708.
The teams were scheduled to conclude the doubleheader later Friday.
