Winthrop at Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. (Interstat) — The Auburn Tigers will look to build on a dominant series-opening victory when they host the Winthrop Eagles in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

First pitch is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Plainsman Park. The second game of the twin bill will follow approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of Game 1.

Auburn (11-2) cruised to a 10-0 win over Winthrop (10-3) on Friday night behind a stellar start from right-hander Jake Marciano. The Tigers’ ace delivered six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six to earn the win.

Marciano (2-1, 1.06 ERA) is slated to take the mound again for Game 1 on Saturday. He has been formidable this season, including a six-inning, no-hit performance against Kansas State on Feb. 20. In his last outing against Winthrop, he thoroughly controlled the Eagles’ lineup.

Winthrop will aim to rebound quickly from the shutout loss, its most lopsided defeat of the season. A bright spot in Friday’s loss was reliever Casey Culbreth, who tossed 1 1/3 perfect innings out of the bullpen. Culbreth has not allowed an earned run in his last three appearances, spanning 3 2/3 innings.

The Eagles had won five straight prior to Friday’s defeat, including a road series win at Michigan State earlier this week. Auburn has won seven of its last eight games, with its only loss in that span a 9-8 setback to Nebraska.

Despite Friday’s result, Interstat’s game simulator projects a tightly contested rematch, forecasting a 8-7 Winthrop victory.

Following the doubleheader, Auburn will host UAB on Tuesday before opening Southeastern Conference play at Missouri next weekend. Winthrop continues its road trip with a midweek series against Princeton before hosting Radford to begin Big South Conference play.
