Washington State at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas (Interstat) — The Washington State Cougars will look to rebound from a wild, high-scoring loss when they open a doubleheader against the surging Texas State Bobcats on Friday.

The first game of the twin bill at Bobcat Ballpark comes less than 24 hours after Texas State outlasted Washington State 13-11 on Thursday. The Bobcats (10-2) have won eight of their last nine, while the Cougars (5-7) have dropped three of four.

Washington State will need its offense to keep pace again, led by center fielder Trevor Smith. Smith went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs in Thursday’s loss and is 7 for 14 with four RBIs over his last three games. First baseman Ryan Skjonsby and shortstop Gavin Roy also had three hits apiece in the series opener.

Texas State counters with a potent lineup featuring right fielder Rashawn Galloway, who torched Cougars pitching Thursday by going 4 for 5 with three RBIs. The Bobcats have scored at least seven runs in six of their 10 victories this season.

The Cougars’ pitching staff, which has a 6.12 team ERA, will be tested by a Texas State team averaging over seven runs per game during its current hot streak. Washington State’s recent results have been a rollercoaster, following a 10-4 win at Long Beach State last Friday with a 5-4 loss at BYU later the same day.

Texas State’s strength has been more consistent, with its only losses coming to Gonzaga and Baylor. The Bobcats’ pitching has been key, posting three shutouts already this season.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 Texas State victory in Friday’s opener.

The doubleheader continues a four-game series between the teams. Washington State remains on the road next week for a three-game set at San Diego State. Texas State hosts Texas on Tuesday before opening Sun Belt Conference play at Louisiana-Monroe next weekend.
