Maryland vs Delaware
NEWARK, Del. (Interstat) — Ryan Costello homered and drove in two runs, and five Maryland relievers combined for seven shutout innings as the Terrapins defeated Delaware 7-3 in a nonconference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
The Terrapins (7-3) avenged a 15-14 home loss to the Blue Hens just over a week prior, using a four-run first inning and steady pitching to secure the road victory. Delaware fell to 5-8.
Maryland sent nine men to the plate in the opening frame against Delaware starter Elias Conway, who failed to record an out. Brayden Martin was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a throwing error and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Rylen Stockton. David Mendez then came home on a sacrifice fly by Paul Jones II. Conway was relieved by Jonah Richardson, who ended the inning but was charged with three earned runs over 2 1/3 innings.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the third inning. After Maryland starter Landon Edwards walked Sal Mineo and allowed a single to Vincent Davis, an error by the Terrapins’ third baseman loaded the bases with no outs. Delaware’s Jeremy Wolf then cleared them with a triple down the left-field line, cutting the Maryland lead to 4-3 and bringing the tying run to the plate.
The threat was abruptly halted, however. After another walk, Anthony DeCesare struck out swinging for what would have been the second out, but the play resulted in an unusual catcher’s interference double play, ending the inning and stranding Wolf at third. The Blue Hens would not score again.
Maryland responded immediately in the top of the fourth. Mendez delivered a two-run single up the middle, scoring Aden Hill and Martin to extend the lead to 6-3. Costello followed with an RBI single to plate Mendez, making it 7-3.
From there, the Terrapins’ bullpen dominated. Andrew Koshy, Ryan Bailey, Jayson Torres and Cristofer Cespedes each threw a scoreless inning in relief of Edwards and Brayden Ryan. Koshy (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 K), Bailey (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K) and Cespedes (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 K) were particularly effective, allowing just one baserunner among them.
Costello provided the final margin with a solo home run to right field in the seventh inning off Delaware reliever Nicholas Bilotto, who otherwise provided a strong outing in long relief with 3 2/3 innings, three hits, one earned run and four strikeouts.
Wolf accounted for all of Delaware’s offense, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. The Blue Hens out-hit Maryland 7-6 but grounded into two double plays, stifling potential rallies.
Maryland added an insurance run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Crosland. The Terrapins capitalized on patience at the plate, drawing 11 walks and utilizing two sacrifice flies.
The Terrapins continue their road trip with a three-game series at Troy beginning Friday. Delaware remains home to host Canisius for a three-game set starting the same day.
