Baseball Preview: Saint Peter’s Peacocks at Army Black Knights
WEST POINT, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Army Black Knights look to continue their recent momentum when they host the struggling Saint Peter’s Peacocks in a nonconference baseball game Tuesday at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
First pitch is scheduled for the evening, with a forecast of 38 degrees and rain.
Army (11-10) enters having won four of its last five, including a three-game sweep at Lafayette over the weekend. The Black Knights won the series finale 10-5 on Sunday, powered by a two-hit, three-RBI day from first baseman Carter Hewitt.
A player to watch for Army is pitcher Trey Ates, who was dominant in relief Sunday. He threw four hitless innings, striking out six and allowing no earned runs. In his last three appearances spanning 14 innings, Ates has allowed just four hits.
Saint Peter’s (2-17) is mired in a difficult stretch, having lost 15 of its last 16 games. The Peacocks are coming off a weekend sweep at home by Fairfield, including an 18-7 loss on Sunday.
Third baseman Alex Manent has provided sporadic power for the Peacocks. He hit a three-run homer in Sunday’s loss and has two home runs and six RBIs in his last 10 games. Aidan Forrest added three hits in the loss.
The teams are on divergent paths. Army has averaged 8.4 runs during its 4-1 stretch, while Saint Peter’s has been outscored 54-11 during a current four-game losing skid.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Army 6, Saint Peter’s 2.
This is a standalone midweek game for both programs. Army opens a key Patriot League series against service academy rival Navy on Friday. Saint Peter’s travels to face La Salle on Wednesday before opening Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at home against Quinnipiac on Friday.
