George Washington at Virginia
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The struggling George Washington Revolutionaries face a steep challenge Wednesday when they visit the Virginia Cavaliers in a midweek nonconference baseball matchup.
First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Disharoon Park.
George Washington (1-5) arrives reeling, having lost five of its first six games, including a 6-3 loss to Lehigh in its most recent outing Saturday. The Revolutionaries’ lone win came in the middle game of that series.
Virginia (6-1), meanwhile, has powered through its early schedule, its only blemish a 6-5 road loss at Stetson last Saturday. The Cavaliers’ offense has been explosive, scoring 10 or more runs in four games, including a 31-run outburst against Wagner on Feb. 14.
A key matchup will feature George Washington right-hander Declan Wywoda against a deep Virginia lineup. Wywoda took the loss against Lehigh on Feb. 21, allowing three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. He will need to navigate a Cavaliers order that is hitting .342 as a team.
Virginia will counter with right-hander John Paone out of the bullpen. Paone was effective in relief in Sunday’s 5-4 win over North Dakota State, striking out six over 3 2/3 innings while allowing two runs.
For George Washington, first baseman Charlie Rogan provides a power threat, hitting a home run in the Lehigh loss. Virginia’s offense is paced by center fielder AJ Gracia, who had a key two-run homer in Sunday’s victory.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a Virginia victory, with a final score of 7-1.
Following Wednesday’s contest, George Washington returns home to host Saint Peter’s for a three-game series starting Friday. Virginia begins a three-game home set against VCU on Friday.
