Texas State at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — The Baylor Bears erupted for eight runs in a chaotic sixth inning and pounded out 17 hits to remain unbeaten with a 14-4 victory over the Texas State Bobcats on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.
The game, a matchup of previously undefeated teams, turned decisively in the bottom of the sixth as Baylor sent 14 batters to the plate against four Texas State pitchers. The inning featured five walks, four wild pitches, three hits and a hit batter, transforming a 6-4 contest into an 11-4 rout.
Baylor improved to 4-0, while Texas State suffered its first loss of the season, falling to 3-1.
The Bears struck first with two runs in the opening inning on a two-run double by Wesley Youens. Texas State answered forcefully in the third, seizing a 4-2 lead. After Jackson Cotton walked, Rashawn Galloway drove him in with an RBI triple. Jaquae Stewart followed with a two-run homer, his first of the season, and Chase Mora immediately added a solo shot, his second, to chase Baylor starter Mason Green.
Baylor chipped away with a run in the second on an RBI single by Hunter Armstrong and tied the game in the fifth on an RBI triple by Ty Janusek. The Bears then took the lead for good later in the fifth on a two-run single by Gavin Caraway.
The sixth inning, however, was the defining stretch. Baylor capitalized on wildness from the Texas State bullpen, scoring four runs on wild pitches alone. Kobe Bergman, who entered as a pinch-runner in the fifth, delivered a key RBI double in the inning as the Bears batted around.
Bergman finished with two RBIs and two runs scored. Armstrong, Caraway and leadoff hitter Ty Sanders each had three of Baylor’s 17 hits. Bo went 3-for-6 with an RBI triple in the seventh, and Janusek reached base four times, scoring twice and driving in a run.
For Texas State, which managed eight hits, Galloway’s RBI triple and Stewart’s two-run homer provided the early offense. Manny Salas added a double in the eighth.
Baylor used seven pitchers in a bullpen game, with Tanner Atkinson earning the win after providing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Texas State starter Otto Hall took the loss, recording just two outs while allowing two runs in the first inning.
The most important part of the game was Baylor’s relentless bottom of the sixth inning. With the score 6-4 and the outcome still in doubt, the Bears’ patient approach and aggressive baserunning, combined with a complete loss of command by the Texas State relief corps, broke the game open. The eight-run outburst, fueled more by free passes and defensive miscues than sheer power, demoralized the Bobcats and showcased Baylor’s depth and opportunistic offense, turning a close contest into a lopsided victory.
Interstat’s ELO system had projected Baylor with a 55.40 percent probability to win.
Texas State opens a three-game series at home against Gonzaga on Friday. Baylor travels to the Round Rock Classic, where it will face Oregon State on Friday.
