Kansas State at Nebraska
ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — Carlos Vasquez drove in all five runs for Kansas State, including the go-ahead two-run single in the 10th inning, and reliever Carson Liggett delivered 4 1/3 hitless innings as the Wildcats outlasted Nebraska 5-3 on Saturday at Clay Gould Ballpark.
In a game defined by dominant relief pitching and timely hitting, the Wildcats improved to 5-1 while the Cornhuskers fell to .500 at 3-3.
The most important sequence of the game unfolded in the top of the 10th inning. With the score tied 3-3, Kansas State’s Raphael Bolin was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, David Kennedy and Shogo Inoue worked back-to-back walks to load the bases for Vasquez. The left fielder, who had already driven in a run earlier, singled sharply through the right side off Nebraska reliever J’Shawn Unger to score Bolin and Kennedy, providing the decisive margin.
Vasquez finished the day 3 for 4, accounting for three of his team’s four total hits. His performance was crucial for a Wildcats offense that was stifled for much of the day by Nebraska starter Carson Jasa, who struck out eight and allowed two hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Nebraska built an early 3-0 lead against Kansas State starter Donte Lewis. Josh Overbeek’s two-run double in the third inning scored Mason Moyer and Cayden Sanderson. The Cornhuskers added a third run in the fifth on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by Wildcats shortstop David Kennedy, allowing Jeter Worthley to score.
Lewis settled after the early trouble, finishing with 6 strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings, but it was Liggett who stole the show from the bullpen. Entering with two on and two out in the fifth, Liggett escaped the jam and proceeded to shut down the Cornhuskers. He did not allow a hit over his 4 1/3 innings of work, walking one and striking out three to earn the win. His outing preserved the Wildcats’ chances and allowed for the extra-inning rally.
Nebraska threatened in the bottom of the 10th, putting two runners on with one out, but Liggett induced a game-ending double play to seal the victory.
The Cornhuskers out-hit the Wildcats 6-4 but grounded into two double plays and left eight runners on base. Chase Olson and Kevin Mannell provided scoreless relief for Nebraska before Unger, who was charged with the loss, surrendered the two runs in the 10th.
Kansas State’s next game is Sunday against Michigan at Globe Life Field in Arlington. Nebraska will face Florida State at the same site on Sunday.
