Longwood at Winthrop
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — Chazz Grossington homered and drove in three runs, Alan Benhardt collected three hits and three RBIs, and Winthrop defeated Longwood 11-5 on Saturday at Winthrop Ballpark in a Big South matchup.
Grossington, who had a five-RBI performance in Friday’s 23-5 win over the Lancers, went 2-for-3 with a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run single in the third. Benhardt added a 3-for-4 day, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth and an RBI double in the seventh. The Eagles (33-22) used a six-run sixth inning to erase a two-run deficit and take control.
Longwood (29-24) struck first with five runs in the opening frame, capitalizing on early opportunities. But Winthrop’s bullpen steadied the game after that initial burst. Raymond McNaught, Ben Rehkow, Shane Keup and Randy Guzman combined for six innings of relief, allowing just three hits while striking out nine. Guzman worked a clean inning with three strikeouts, and Keup fanned two in 1 2/3 scoreless innings.
The turning point came in the bottom of the sixth. Trailing 5-3, Winthrop loaded the bases with one out on a walk, a sacrificed bunt and a walk. Benhardt then singled to shallow center, scoring Grossington and pinch runner Natividad to tie the game at 5. After a single by Wouters and a walk to Skowronski, Ethan Wilson greeted reliever Fordham with a ground-rule double to left-center, plating two more for a 7-5 lead.
Winthrop added four more in the seventh, aided by a throwing error that allowed an unearned run. Benhardt doubled to right-center to score Norton, and a subsequent error on a grounder by Wouters brought home Ben for a 10-5 lead. Norton, who entered as a pinch runner, delivered an RBI single in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Longwood’s offense managed nine hits but could not overcome the early deficit. Bruggeman doubled and scored in the first, and Yeatts singled twice. Longwood reliever Joe Gomez pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings with three strikeouts, and Callen Travers tossed 2 2/3 innings allowing one earned run.
Grossington’s recent hot streak continued. After an 0-for-2 game Thursday against Longwood and an 0-for-5 performance at South Carolina on May 12, he rebounded with a 4-for-6, five-RBI game Friday and followed with Saturday’s effort. Ben Rehkow earned the win in relief, throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Eagles’ bullpen combined for 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out 12. Longwood’s pitching staff issued six walks and hit three batters, contributing to the Eagles’ 13-hit attack.
Winthrop improved to 2-1 in the three-game series, with the finale scheduled for Sunday. Longwood fell to 1-2 in the set after winning the opener 8-2 on Thursday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Longwood 4, Winthrop 3, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Winthrop a 67.30 percent probability to win.
