Cal State Fullerton at UC San Diego
LA JOLLA, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC San Diego Tritons look to complete a three-game Big West sweep against the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Saturday at Triton Baseball Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. under cloudy skies with temperatures near 72 degrees.
UC San Diego (23-25 overall, but 13-8 in conference after Thursday’s win) has won the first two games of the series, including a 10-6 victory Thursday behind a powerful offensive display. The Tritons will send a pitcher to be announced to the mound against a Titans team that has dropped six of its last seven games.
Cal State Fullerton (21-28, 8-13) has lost 11 of its past 13 contests and is in danger of falling further in the Big West standings. The Titans are coming off Thursday’s loss in which they managed six runs on 12 hits but could not overcome a five-run third inning by the Tritons.
Players to watch
Brady Dockan has been a frequent arm out of the Fullerton bullpen, though the right-hander has struggled recently. In Thursday’s loss, Dockan threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing no hits and striking out two. Over his past six appearances, all in relief, Dockan has a 3.86 ERA across 11 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.
Anthony Potestio has been a steady force for UC San Diego at the plate. The shortstop went 3-for-5 with three RBIs in Thursday’s win, as part of a recent hot stretch. Over his last seven games, Potestio is hitting .360 (9-for-25) with six RBIs.
Recent history
The Tritons have outscored Fullerton 20-6 over the first two games of this series. Thursday’s 10-run outburst included a two-run home run from right fielder Nick Costello and a solo shot from first baseman Gabe Camacho.
Fullerton’s Cameron Kim had three hits Thursday, but the Titans left nine runners on base.
Projection
Interstat’s game simulator projects UC San Diego as a 5-3 winner, and its ELO system gives the Tritons a 54.3 percent probability of winning the series finale.
