Pepperdine at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — Pepperdine visits Santa Clara on Saturday evening at Stephen Schott Stadium in a West Coast Conference series finale, with first pitch scheduled for 77 degrees and clear skies.

The Waves (21-30) look to avoid a sweep after dropping the first two games of the three-game set. Santa Clara (23-28) won Thursday’s opener 10-0 and also took Friday’s contest, improving to 5-2 in their last seven games. The Broncos have outscored Pepperdine 10-0 in the series so far.

Saturday’s game features a marquee pitching matchup. Pepperdine right-hander Casey Euper will take the mound after a rough outing Thursday in which he allowed four earned runs over four innings despite not surrendering a hit (four walks, seven strikeouts). Euper (2-5, 4.20 ERA) has been inconsistent this season, but he threw six scoreless innings against Seattle on April 24 and struck out eight in a win over Portland on May 8.

Santa Clara counters with sophomore left-hander Max Bayles, who has been dominant in recent starts. Bayles (6-1, 2.10 ERA) fired six scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts in Thursday’s win over Pepperdine, allowing three hits. In his previous outing at Seattle on May 8, he threw five hitless innings with six strikeouts. Over his last four starts, Bayles has allowed just one earned run in 20 innings while striking out 26.

Santa Clara’s offense has leaned on freshman Max Ross, who delivered a home run and two RBIs in Thursday’s victory.

Pepperdine enters the game having lost four of its last six, though the Waves took two of three from Portland at home the previous weekend. The Waves’ offense has struggled, scoring three or fewer runs in five of their last six games.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Pepperdine victory, but the same outlet’s ELO system gives Santa Clara a 67 percent probability to win.

The game marks the final regular-season meeting between the two programs this year.
