Southern California at Oregon
EUGENE (Interstat) — Oregon outlasted Southern California 6-5 in 14 innings Saturday afternoon to win the Big 10 series two games to one, scoring the winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt in the bottom of the 14th. The Ducks and Trojans each collected 13 hits in a marathon that lasted more than five hours.
Oregon took an early lead in the first inning. Robert Cooney singled, advanced on a hit batsman and a wild pitch, then scored on a groundout. A safety squeeze brought home another run for a 2-0 edge. The Ducks stretched the lead to 3-0 in the second on Maddox Molony’s solo home run to left field. Two more runs followed in the same inning, an RBI single by David Smith making it 4-0 before Southern California changed pitchers.
The Trojans got on the board in the third when Ricardo Tejeda homered down the left-field line. The score remained 4-1 until the sixth inning, when Southern California struck. Kevin Takeuchi walked, stole second and scored on Adrian Lopez’s two-run homer to right-center, tying the game at 4. Lopez’s blast was the first of three homers for the Trojans.
