Oral Roberts at Northern Colorado

GARDEN CITY, Colo. (Interstat) — Nathan Love rebounded from a rough outing five days earlier by tossing five shutout innings, and Oral Roberts pounded out 16 hits to defeat Northern Colorado 10-3 on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field in a Summit League matchup.

Love, who allowed six earned runs over 2⅓ innings May 10 against Omaha, scattered no hits while striking out three and yielding two earned runs. He was replaced after the fifth with a 7-0 lead. Braydon Sanford, Keaton Ruthardt, Luke Williams and Kash Ferris combined to close out the final four innings, with Ferris notching the save by working a scoreless ninth.

The Golden Eagles improved to 32-21 overall and 16-11 in Summit League play. The Bears fell to 16-36 and 11-19.

Oral Roberts jumped on Northern Colorado starter Jake Storey immediately in the top of the first. Will Edmunson singled, Makani Tanaka tripled him home and Wailele Kane Yates singled to score Tanaka. After a fielder’s choice, Martell Davis crushed a two-run homer to left-center, putting the Golden Eagles ahead 4-0.

The Bears managed only one hit through the first four innings against Love. But Oral Roberts continued to add runs. In the second, Edmunson singled again, advanced on a passed ball and scored on Tanaka’s single. Tanaka scored on Yates’ double, and Davis singled to drive in Yates, extending the lead to 7-0.

Lucas Stone replaced Storey in the second and worked 3⅓ innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs. Logan Borboa followed with four innings of three-hit relief, striking out five, but the Golden Eagles’ bats remained hot.

In the fifth, Cooper Combs singled, Davis singled and Cooper Kelly singled to load the bases. Matthew Mainord cleared them with a two-run single to center, scoring Davis and Combs, making it 9-0.

Northern Colorado finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Zeke Minic singled, Brett Barber doubled and Brandon Sanchez doubled to left-center, scoring both runners to trim the deficit to 9-2.

Wailele Kane Yates answered in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to left-center, restoring a 10-2 lead. Yates finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

The Bears scratched across one run in the sixth off Sanford. Ethan Mooser reached on an error, stole third and scored on Mason Griffin’s single. But Sanford, Ruthardt, Williams and Ferris slammed the door from there.

Davis led the Oral Roberts offense, going 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs. Tanaka added two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Kelly had two hits. Combs tripled and scored twice.

For Northern Colorado, Sanchez drove in two runs. Griffin had two hits and an RBI. Borboa pitched effectively in long relief, striking out five over four innings.

The game was the third of a four-game series. Oral Roberts had won 14-2 on Friday, while Northern Colorado took a 7-6 decision Thursday. The Golden Eagles have now won four of five meetings this season.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Northern Colorado 6, Oral Roberts 5. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Oral Roberts with a 79.00 percent probability to win.
