Delaware State at Coppin State
ELKRIDGE, Md. (Interstat) — Coppin State hosts Delaware State on Saturday evening at Joe Cannon Stadium in a Northeast Conference matchup, with the Eagles seeking to split the weekend series after the teams split the first two games.
Coppin State (11-36) took the opener 8-3 on Thursday, but Delaware State (8-40) bounced back with a 16-3 victory Friday. The three-game set concludes Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies and a temperature of 67 degrees.
The Hornets’ offense exploded in Friday’s win, led by left fielder Alec Rodriguez, who went 5-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs. Rodriguez has been on a tear, collecting hits in seven of his last eight games, including a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance against Wagner on May 2. He is a key threat atop Delaware State’s lineup.
Coppin State will look to its pitching staff to contain Rodriguez and the Hornets’ bats. Right-hander Mekenna Wakakuwa, who pitched 0.1 innings of relief Friday, allowing two hits and no earned runs with one strikeout, could see action again. However, Wakakuwa has struggled recently, surrendering six earned runs in one inning against Long Island on April 19 and three earned runs in 0.2 innings against Stonehill on April 25.
The Eagles’ offense must also improve after managing just three runs Friday. Shortstop Emilio Feliciano went 2-for-4 with an RBI in that game, and right fielder Terrell Milliner added two hits and an RBI.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, Coppin State is projected to win 5-4, with a 53.9 percent probability of victory per the ELO system.
Delaware State’s season record across all competitions is 8-40, while Coppin State stands at 11-36. Both teams are fighting to finish the season strong.
Saturday’s game marks the third meeting between the two schools in four days, with the Hornets looking to take the series after evening the set Friday.
