Rams outlast Wildcats 12‑9 on walk-off homer

RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — Alec Warden went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Teige Lethert hit a walk-off three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as VCU beat Davidson 12-9 on Saturday in Atlantic 10 play.

The Rams improved to 32-22 overall; the Wildcats fell to 25-26.

Warden’s second-inning sacrifice fly and fifth-inning two-run homer helped VCU build an early lead. Nick Flores also homered in the second. Davidson’s Forrest Lietz drove in four runs, including a three-run double in the sixth that tied the game at 9.

Hunter Gotschall pitched 3.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts for VCU, and Dawson Newman added two shutout frames. Jacob Vokal tossed 2.1 hitless innings for Davidson.

The game featured seven lead changes. VCU took a 9-8 lead in the fifth on a wild pitch and a fielding error, but Lietz’s double put Davidson ahead 9-9 before Lietz scored on a fielder’s choice. Davidson then took a 10-9 lead in the eighth on an unearned run.

Lethert’s walk-off blast in the ninth scored Warden and Brandon Petite.
