NJIT at Maryland-Baltimore County

CATONSVILLE, Md. (Interstat) — The Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers aim to complete a three-game sweep of the NJIT Highlanders on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in America East action.

UMBC (25-22) has dominated the series, winning 17-6 on Friday and 12-4 on Thursday. The Retrievers have won four of their last five games overall, while NJIT (16-30-1) has dropped four of five.

The Retrievers’ offense has been explosive, averaging 14.5 runs in the series. Left fielder Ehi Okojie has been at the center of the attack. In Friday’s win, he went 3 for 4 with a home run and six RBIs. Over his last 10 games, Okojie is batting .400 with three home runs and 18 RBIs. He has multiple hits in eight of those contests. For the season, Okojie leads UMBC with 10 homers and 45 RBIs.

NJIT right fielder Nick Vega has also produced power. He homered and drove in four runs in Friday’s loss and added a home run and an RBI in Thursday’s defeat. Over his last 10 games, Vega is hitting .250 with three homers and nine RBIs, though he has gone hitless in three of those games. Vega leads the Highlanders with 12 home runs and 38 RBIs.

NJIT’s pitching staff has been battered, allowing 29 runs and 30 hits in the first two games. The Highlanders’ bullpen showed signs of life Friday with Talon Mihalinac (1 2/3 scoreless innings) and Tate Jones (1/3 inning) combining for two hitless frames. However, NJIT’s starters have struggled to go deep, and the team’s 7.41 ERA is the highest in the America East.

UMBC’s Zach Robinson earned the win Friday, allowing four earned runs over 5 2/3 innings while striking out six. The Retrievers’ bullpen has a 3.47 ERA over the last seven games. UMBC is 13-9 at home this season.

Weather for Saturday’s first pitch: clouds, 66 degrees.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 UMBC victory, giving the Retrievers a 57.4 percent probability to win.

NJIT’s best win this season came May 10 at Boston College, an 8-7 victory. The Highlanders also beat Bryant and Fairleigh Dickinson but have a 5-15 record on the road. They have one tie, a 11-11 game against Fairleigh Dickinson on April 29.

UMBC’s resume includes series wins over Bryant and Albany, though the Retrievers lost 9-8 at Towson on May 12.

The all-time series between the two programs favors UMBC at 7-3.

Saturday’s game is the regular-season finale for both teams. UMBC sits fourth in the America East standings; NJIT is eighth. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
