Villanova at Connecticut
GERALDTON, Ont. (Interstat) — Collin Quintano homered and drove in four runs to lead Villanova to a 9-6 victory over Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark, snapping a two-game losing streak in the Big East series.
Quintano, the Wildcats’ designated hitter, went 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs, bouncing back from an 0-for-4 performance in Friday’s 8-0 loss and a 1-for-3 game Thursday in which he homered. His first-inning, two-run homer to left center gave Villanova a quick 2-0 lead, and his two-run double in the fourth inning capped a four-run outburst that pushed the lead to 9-3.
Villanova (19-30, 9-12 Big East) pounded out 12 hits and scored in three of the first four innings. Austin Lemon went 2 for 5 with three RBIs, including a two-run double in the third inning that scored Quintano and Michael Whooley. Aidan Barry homered to right center in the fourth, plating Mark Giallusi for a 7-3 lead.
The Wildcats jumped on Connecticut starter Oliver Pudvar immediately. JoJo Montgomery singled to lead off the game, and Quintano followed with his homer. After a quiet second inning, Villanova added two more runs in the third on Lemon’s double. In the fourth, Barry’s homer and Quintano’s second double of the game produced four runs, chasing Pudvar after 3 1/3 innings.
Connecticut (32-24, 13-8) answered each early deficit but could not overcome the large margin. After falling behind 4-0, the Huskies scored three times in the bottom of the third. Cam Righi doubled to left center to drive in Gabriel Tirado and Anthony Belisario, and Jackson Marshall tripled to left field to score Righi, cutting the lead to 4-3. But Villanova’s four-run fourth restored a six-run cushion.
The Huskies continued to chip away. Righi scored on a Chris Polemeni single in the fifth, making it 9-4. In the sixth, Peyton Jemison scored on a sacrifice fly by Belisario to cut the deficit to 9-5. Connecticut added one more run in the ninth when Belisario, who led off with a walk, scored on a double-play groundout by Marshall. With two outs, Maddix Dalena doubled to right center, but Chris Polemeni struck out to end the game.
Villanova used five pitchers. Starter Jake Francis pitched four innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out two. Graham Moore earned the win, throwing 3 1/3 innings of relief with no hits allowed, two earned runs and two strikeouts. Matthew Kahn recorded the final out of the ninth inning after Moore exited with runners on base, striking out Polemeni for his first save of the season.
For Connecticut, Garret Garbinski threw three shutout innings of relief, giving up four hits and striking out four, but the damage already had been done. Righi finished 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Marshall drove in two runs and tripled.
The victory was Villanova’s first in the series after dropping the first two games, 8-0 and 6-5. The Wildcats had lost three straight overall before Saturday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Connecticut 7, Villanova 6, and the Interstat ELO system had given Connecticut an 83.30 percent probability to win.
