William & Mary at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. (Interstat) — William & Mary visits Duke on Tuesday night in a midweek nonconference baseball game, with both teams seeking momentum after difficult stretches.

The Tribe (21-28) and the Blue Devils (23-28) meet at 6 p.m. at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The forecast calls for clear skies and a temperature in the 70s at first pitch.

William & Mary comes off a 14-6 win Sunday over Towson, snapping a five-game losing streak. First baseman Charlie Iriotakis keyed the victory, going 3-for-5 with a home run and six RBIs. Iriotakis, however, has been streaky: he had gone 0-for-20 over his previous five games combined before the breakout performance. For the season, he remains one of the Tribe’s most dangerous bats.

Pitching was also critical in Sunday’s win. Connor Jernigan threw three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two. Luke Calveric added two scoreless frames with one hit and one strikeout.

Duke, meanwhile, has lost six straight, including a 14-1 defeat Sunday at Georgia Tech in a game shortened to seven innings. The Blue Devils allowed 14 runs on 14 hits and have given up 10 or more runs in four of their last five outings.

Reliever Marcello Mastroianni pitched 1 2/3 innings Sunday, allowing two earned runs on no hits with one strikeout. Over his last seven appearances, the right-hander has an ERA of 8.31, though he has shown flashes of effectiveness, including a scoreless outing April 21 at Liberty.

Interstat’s game simulator projects William & Mary as a 5-1 winner.

After Tuesday, the Tribe travel to College of Charleston for a three-game series starting Thursday. Duke hosts Wake Forest for a three-game set beginning Thursday.
