Akron at Oakland

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (Interstat) — Easton Amundson went 5 for 5 with two home runs and six runs batted in, but the Akron Zips could not overcome a six-run outburst by the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in the sixth inning Tuesday afternoon as Oakland won 13-10 at Oakland University Baseball Field.

Amundson, the designated hitter, led a 16-hit Akron attack that included three hits from Kelton Phillips and two hits and two RBIs from Kyle McConachie, who entered as a pinch hitter in the sixth and stayed at shortstop. Amundson homered in the fourth and seventh innings and also doubled for three RBIs in the first. But the Zips, who dropped to 20-31, saw a 6-4 lead evaporate when Oakland sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth.

Ben Clark, Oakland’s designated hitter, finished 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs to pace the Golden Grizzlies (10-37). Clark also stole two bases, scored three runs and was hit by a pitch in the eighth. His solo homer in the first inning gave Oakland an early response after Akron had taken a 3-0 lead in the top half on Amundson’s three-run double.

The pivotal inning began with Oakland trailing 6-4. After a strikeout, Boston Halloran singled, and Mason Palermo tripled to left center to drive in Halloran. Clark followed with a single up the middle to score Palermo and tie the game at 6. Kyle Revere singled, and after a passed ball advanced both runners, Aidan Orr walked to load the bases. Carter Hain then reached on an error by McConachie, allowing Clark and Revere to score and Orr to take third. Orr scored on a wild pitch, and Aidan Schuck singled through the left side to bring home Hain and make it 10-6. Schuck was caught stealing to end the inning.

Akron answered in the seventh when Amundson hit his second homer, a two-run shot to deep right field that scored Blake Bowen and cut the deficit to 10-8. But Oakland added three unearned runs in the eighth. Clark led off with a hit by pitch, Revere walked, and both moved up on a passed ball. Clark scored on a passed ball, and Revere came home on Lucas Day’s sacrifice fly. Tony Konopiots then singled to drive in Orr, who had walked, for a 13-8 lead.

The Zips rallied in the ninth. Amundson singled, Henry Hayman singled, and Atticus Huffstutler, pinch hitting, singled to score Amundson. McConachie then singled to score Hayman and pull Akron within 13-10, but Phillips popped out to second to end the game.

Oakland used four pitchers. Jordan Dahlof threw three innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Jaxson Easterlin worked two innings, giving up one run on three hits with one strikeout. Wyatt Ruppenthal and Tanner Ware combined for the final two innings. Akron’s Taylor Bednar started and allowed two runs on three hits over three innings, striking out three. Nathan Currah, Garrett Groce, Landon Vandegrift and Trieg Matthews followed. Vandegrift took the loss, charged with two unearned runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Akron had won two of its previous three games, including a 12-10 victory at Central Michigan on Saturday. Oakland had lost seven straight before Tuesday, most recently a three-game sweep at Notre Dame.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Akron 4, Oakland 1, and the ELO system gave Oakland a 50.70 percent probability to win. The Zips next host Miami (Ohio) for a three-game series beginning Thursday, while Oakland travels to Milwaukee for a three-game set starting the same day.
