Northeastern at Connecticut
GERALDTON, Ontario (Interstat) — The Northeastern Huskies and Connecticut Huskies meet Tuesday evening at Elliot Ballpark for a non-conference clash between two teams riding recent momentum. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature of 28 degrees.
Northeastern (31-18) enters the game after sweeping a three-game home series against Stony Brook, outscoring the Seawolves 34-7 over the weekend. Connecticut (30-22) took a road series at Seton Hall, winning three straight by a combined 24-7 margin.
The pitching matchup features two of the teams’ top arms. Northeastern right-hander Cooper Maher (5-1, 3.86 ERA) threw five innings of one-hit shutout ball in his last start Sunday against Stony Brook, striking out two in a 7-4 win. He has allowed zero earned runs in two of his past three appearances. Connecticut right-hander Oliver Pudvar (6-2, 2.58 ERA) matched that dominance Sunday at Seton Hall, firing six scoreless innings in a 7-3 victory. Pudvar also tossed seven shutout innings against Georgetown on April 26.
The teams met earlier this season March 31, when Connecticut routed Northeastern 21-5 in a seven-inning game. Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-7 win for the visiting Huskies, though the ELO system gives Connecticut a 51.4 percent probability to win.
Both clubs are coming off weekend sweeps. Northeastern’s offense was paced Sunday by first baseman AJ Aschettino, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, and pitcher Andrew Wertz earned a two-inning save. Connecticut’s Chris Polemeni drove in five runs with a home run in the series finale. Greg Shaw added three innings of one-run relief.
The game is the final non-conference tuneup before league play resumes. Northeastern visits Towson for a three-game series starting Thursday, while Connecticut hosts Villanova for a three-game set beginning the same day.
