Louisville at Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — The Louisville Cardinals and Vanderbilt Commodores meet Tuesday night at Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium in a nonconference matchup of teams with nearly identical records.

First pitch is set for 6 p.m. under cloudy skies with a temperature of 73 degrees.

Louisville (26-22) enters on a three-game losing streak after being swept in a weekend series at Wake Forest, capped by a 7-5 loss Saturday. The Cardinals, who have dropped five of their last seven, will look to right-hander Ty Starke to provide length from the bullpen. Starke has been effective in recent outings: over six appearances since April 12, he has allowed only one earned run in 10 2/3 innings, striking out five. In his last three outings, he has thrown 4 2/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts, including a hitless 1 2/3 innings Saturday against Wake Forest.

Vanderbilt (27-22) also lost its last game, falling 8-5 at Alabama on Saturday, but has won three of its last six. The Commodores are 14-11 at home this season. Reliever Tyler Baird has been a key arm out of the bullpen. Baird has allowed one earned run over his last four innings, striking out eight in that span, including four in three scoreless innings Saturday against Alabama. However, he has had erratic outings, including a four-earned-run performance in 2 1/3 innings on April 17 at Kentucky.

Saturday’s most productive players for Louisville were Starke, Peter Michael (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K) and Aaron England (1 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 2 K). For Vanderbilt, Baird was joined by designated hitter Colin Barczi (1-for-4, home run, 3 RBIs) and pitcher Luke Guth (2 IP, 0 H, 1 ER, 2 K).

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 victory for Vanderbilt.

The Cardinals are scheduled to open a three-game series at Miami on Thursday, followed by a home game against Bellarmine on May 12 and a three-game set against Virginia starting May 14. The Commodores travel to Missouri for a three-game series starting Friday, then host South Carolina for a three-game series beginning May 14.
