Oregon at Washington

SEATTLE (Interstat) — Oregon visits Washington on Saturday in a Big Ten matchup at Husky Ballpark, with the 15th-ranked Ducks looking to even the series after dropping the opener 3-1 on Friday.

Oregon (33-11 overall) holds a commanding lead in the conference standings, while Washington (19-24) snapped a two-game skid with Friday’s victory. The Ducks have won seven of their last nine, including a 4-3 win over Gonzaga on Tuesday.

Right-hander Luke Morgan is a key arm for Oregon out of the bullpen. Morgan has been effective in recent outings, tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts against Gonzaga on April 28 and tossing 0.1 hitless innings with a strikeout against Penn State on April 25. However, he has been prone to blow-up appearances, allowing three earned runs in a 13-16 loss at Illinois on April 18 and four earned runs in a 9-13 loss at Portland on April 8. For the season, Morgan has a 5.40 ERA.

Shortstop Sam DeCarlo leads Washington’s offense and is coming off a standout performance in Tuesday’s 6-4 win at Eastern Michigan, going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. DeCarlo has been consistent at the plate, recording a hit in eight of his last 10 games, including a 2-for-3, two-RBI showing against Michigan State on April 19. He is hitting .310 with five home runs and 28 RBIs this season.

Washington has dropped three of its last five, but snapped a two-game losing streak with the win at Eastern Michigan. The Huskies have a slightly better record at home, going 9-10 at Husky Ballpark this season.

Oregon’s last game before the series was the home win over Gonzaga, where Morgan and reliever Shane Johnson each tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and right fielder Angel Laya went 1-for-3 with a home run.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, Oregon is projected to win 8-4, with the Ducks holding a 70.2 percent probability of victory based on the ELO system.

Oregon and Washington meet again Sunday for the series finale. The Ducks then return home to host Grand Canyon on Tuesday, while Washington travels to Seattle University on Tuesday.
