Texas Tech at Baylor
WACO, Texas (Interstat) — The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Baylor Bears meet Saturday afternoon in the opener of a three-game Big 12 series at Baylor Ballpark, with both teams fighting for momentum entering the final stretch of the regular season.
Texas Tech (22-22, 7-14 Big 12) has lost seven of its last eight games, including a three-game sweep at the hands of Oklahoma State last weekend. The Red Raiders were outscored 36-16 in that series, capped by an 11-2 loss Sunday in which left fielder Logan Hughes homered and drove in two runs.
Hughes is the top hitter for Texas Tech entering the game. Over his last 10 games, the outfielder is batting .346 (9 for 26) with three home runs and 11 RBIs, despite the team’s struggles. He has recorded multiple hits in six of those contests and has driven in at least one run in seven of them.
Baylor (23-21, 10-14) comes off a 6-2 win Tuesday against UT-Arlington, led by first baseman Tyce Armstrong, who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs. Armstrong has been on a power surge, with four home runs over his last four games and nine RBIs in that span. He is hitting .421 (8 for 19) with four home runs and seven RBIs in his last five contests.
The Bears have dropped seven of their last 10 games overall, including a sweep at Arizona State last weekend, but have won three of their last four at home.
Weather could be a factor. The forecast calls for rain and a game-time temperature of 56 degrees.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-2 Baylor victory.
After Saturday’s game, the teams will close the series Sunday afternoon. Texas Tech then travels to face Dallas Baptist on Tuesday. Baylor hosts Texas State on Tuesday.
Both teams are outside the postseason picture as the regular season enters its final three weeks, making each conference series crucial.
