Columbia at Cornell

ITHACA, N.Y. (Interstat) — Evan Kleinhans took a no-hitter into the ninth inning and Anthony Temesvary hit a solo home run as Columbia shut out Cornell 2-0 in the first game of an Ivy League doubleheader Saturday at Hoy Field.

Kleinhans, a right-hander, retired the first 18 Big Red batters he faced after a leadoff walk in the first inning. He struck out five and did not allow a hit until Cornell’s Jace Hager singled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Kleinhans exited after that hit, having thrown 8⅓ innings of no-hit ball, and reliever Will Harrigan closed out the win.

Kleinhans, who entered Saturday with a 6.43 ERA over 14 innings this season, set down the side in order in the second, third, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. His performance anchored the Lions to their 13th victory of the season against 22 losses and one tie.

Columbia took the lead in the third inning. Temesvary led off with a single through the left side and advanced to third on a single by Cole Fellows. Fellows then took second on a balk, with Temesvary scoring the game’s first run. The Lions added a run in the fifth when Temesvary homered to right-center field, his first home run of the game, finishing 2-for-4 with the RBI.

Cornell threatened twice but could not push across a run. In the first, singles by Miles Barela and Nate Carlson put runners on first and third with one out, but a fielder’s choice erased Carlson at second and a strikeout ended the frame. In the fourth, Caden Wildman singled and Hager was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout and a fielder’s choice left two runners stranded.

The Big Red loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth after Hager singled, pinch-runner Beckett Barclay advanced to second on a single by Kade Hower, and a single by Sam Swidorski loaded the bases. But Tyler Beaulieu grounded into a shortstop-to-first double play to end the game.

Columbia outhit Cornell 8-7. Temesvary and Tate Vogler each had two hits for the Lions. Fellows reached base twice with a hit and a hit by pitch. For Cornell, Beaulieu went 2-for-4 with a double, and Wildman, Carlson and Hower each had one hit.

Columbia starter Michael Tight pitched four innings of relief after entering in the fifth, allowing one hit and striking out three. He was replaced by Ross Yoshida, who threw a perfect ninth inning.

Cornell starter John Hegarty took the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over four innings with one strikeout. He threw 70 pitches. Tight, Yoshida and John L. combined to hold the Lions to two runs.

The game was the first of a twinbill between the Ivy League rivals. The series continues Sunday at Hoy Field for a single game.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Columbia 5, Cornell 4, while Interstat’s ELO system gave Columbia a 71.50 percent probability to win.
