Lipscomb at Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. (Interstat) — Jacob Price pitched seven innings of four-hit shutout baseball, leading Eastern Kentucky to a 2-0 victory over Lipscomb on Saturday at Turkey Hughes Field in an ASUN Conference matchup.

Price, who had allowed seven earned runs in his previous start April 25 against North Alabama, rebounded with a dominant performance. He struck out eight, walked none and allowed only four hits, none for extra bases. The right-hander faced 26 batters and did not permit a runner past second base until the sixth inning.

Lipscomb starter Jace Trautner was nearly as effective, spinning 6 2/3 innings in which he allowed no hits but two earned runs, striking out five. His undoing came in the seventh inning when the Colonels broke a scoreless tie with both of their runs.

Eastern Kentucky struck first in the bottom of the first inning. David Alvarez singled up the middle, stole second and scored on a single to center by Dylan Littlefield for a 1-0 lead. That was the only hit Trautner allowed, but the Colonels pieced together three more hits in the seventh to add an insurance run.

With one out in the seventh, Shevey singled to the pitcher’s mound, and Kobe Benson followed with a single up the middle that sent Shevey to third. Lipscomb brought in reliever Kaleb Kantola, who allowed a single through the right side by Pedro Moreno that plated Shevey. Moreno’s hit scored the second run, and Benson moved to second. Moreno later advanced to third on a fielding error by shortstop Holm, but Kantola struck out Pratt to end the inning.

The Bisons had their best scoring chance in the sixth inning. Brady Miller led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a flyout, but was stranded when Thomas struck out swinging. Lipscomb put two runners on in the eighth and ninth innings but could not score.

Lipscomb finished with seven hits, one more than Eastern Kentucky. Miller went 3 for 4 to lead the Bisons. Littlefield was 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Colonels, and Moreno added a hit and an RBI.

Kantola worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings with a strikeout. Griffin Howell pitched two innings of relief for Eastern Kentucky, allowing three hits but no runs.

The victory improved Eastern Kentucky’s record to 11 wins and 35 losses. Lipscomb fell to 20 wins and 23 losses.

The Colonels entered the game on a season in which they had allowed double-digit runs in eight of their previous 10 losses. The series between the two teams had been lopsided, with Lipscomb winning the previous day 9-3 and taking three of four meetings earlier in the season. Eastern Kentucky’s only win in the previous six head-to-head contests had come March 28, a 15-3 rout.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Lipscomb 5, Eastern Kentucky 2, and Interstat’s ELO system gave Lipscomb a 66.10 percent probability to win.
