Air Force at New Mexico
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Interstat) — Air Force visits New Mexico on Friday night in a Mountain West series opener, with both teams seeking consistency after high-scoring midweek losses.
The Falcons enter at 21-21 overall after a 5-4 loss at Northern Colorado on Tuesday. New Mexico, which hosts the three-game set, is 24-18-1 following a wild 16-15, 10-inning loss to New Mexico State.
Air Force will look to right-hander Easton Miller, who has been effective in longer outings. In his most recent appearance Tuesday, Miller pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing zero hits and striking out three. His season has been erratic, however. He allowed four earned runs in one inning against Fresno State on April 12 but bounced back with a 1.2-inning, one-earned-run outing against Northern Colorado on April 8.
For New Mexico, third baseman Akili Carris has been a consistent run producer. He went 4 for 6 with four RBIs in Tuesday’s loss to New Mexico State and had a pair of four-RBI games within the past two weeks, including a 2-for-5 performance against San Diego State on April 12. Carris has also shown power potential, though his production in the Washington State series was more modest, collecting three hits in 12 at-bats.
The Lobos dropped two of three at Washington State last weekend but took the middle game 4-3. New Mexico also won series against Nevada and San Diego State earlier this month, demonstrating the ability to bounce back from losses.
Air Force is coming off a series sweep of San Jose State, winning by scores of 11-5, 16-6 and 20-10. The Falcons have been productive at the plate but have also allowed double-digit runs in several games this season, including a 16-12 loss at Grand Canyon on April 19. Tuesday’s loss snapped a four-game winning streak.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 victory for Air Force, though the ELO system gives New Mexico a 53.3 percent probability to win.
Weather at game time is expected to be mild.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday before both teams face challenging nonconference opponents next week. Air Force hosts Washington State, while New Mexico travels to Grand Canyon.
