Elon at William & Mary
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Interstat) — Jamie Laskofski hit a walk-off home run to right field in the bottom of the 12th inning, lifting William & Mary to a 5-4 victory over Elon on Friday at Plumeri Park.
Laskofski finished 4 for 6 with two RBIs and his sixth homer of the season, capping a dramatic back-and-forth Colonial Athletic Association contest that saw the Tribe improve to 20-23 overall and Elon drop to 17-27.
William & Mary erased a 4-1 deficit and tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when a fielding error by Elon second baseman Alford allowed Kaczmarek to reach, loading the bases. Francella then grounded out to third, scoring Bartletti and making it 4-3. The Tribe tied it in the same inning when a sacrifice fly by Greco scored Kosuda.
The game remained deadlocked at 4 through the seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th and 11th innings, with both teams trading chances. Elon threatened in the top of the 12th when Evans singled and Sterling singled to put runners on first and second with one out, but Hajdu flied out to center and Alford lined out to third to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 12th, Laskofski stepped to the plate with two outs and drove a 1-1 pitch over the right-field wall for the game-ending blast. The walk-off homer was his second of the series this season; he also went deep in a win over Elon earlier this month.
William & Mary struck first in the bottom of the first. Laskofski doubled to right center, stole third after Kaczmarek struck out on a dropped third strike, and scored on a groundout by Iriotakis.
Elon answered immediately in the top of the second. Brian DuRoff homered to left field, his sixth of the season, to tie the game at 1. The Phoenix added two more in the third when Sterling singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Hall, making it 2-1. Vincent Fattore added a solo homer in the fourth, his fifth of the season, to push the lead to 3-1. Sterling then scored on a sacrifice fly by Alford in the fifth to make it 4-1.
William & Mary chipped away. In the bottom of the fourth, Kosuda singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Greco, cutting it to 4-2. The Tribe then tied it in the sixth as described.
Both bullpens settled in after that. Elon starter Brian Strange went six innings, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out seven, but took a no-decision. Sam Nomura relieved and threw five scoreless innings, giving up only one hit with two strikeouts. William & Mary used a committee of pitchers. Jack Weight went three innings, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts. Charlie Richwine entered in the sixth and tossed 4 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts. Tom Bourque threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with one strikeout.
Defensive miscues marred the game for Elon. Alford committed two errors at second base, one on a failed pickoff attempt in the second and another in the eighth that allowed Bartletti to reach and eventually score on a groundout. The Tribe matched Elon’s two errors with one of their own.
For William & Mary, Laskofski continued his hot streak. He went 4 for 6 in the win at North Carolina A&T on April 26 and had three hits in each of the two previous games against the Aggies. Elon came into the game having lost five of its last six, including a weekend sweep by UNC Wilmington.
The two teams meet again Saturday and Sunday at Plumeri Park to complete the series.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of William & Mary 6, Elon 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave William & Mary a 53.20 percent probability to win.
