UCLA at UC Santa Barbara
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The top-ranked UCLA Bruins visit UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, with first pitch set for 6 p.m. under clear skies and 65-degree temperatures.
UCLA (39-4) enters the nonconference matchup after a 9-6 loss to Sacramento State on Sunday, snapping a seven-game winning streak. The Bruins, who have already clinched a series win over the Gauchos earlier this season, look to rebound behind shortstop Roch Cholowsky. The junior is on a tear at the plate, going 4-for-9 with three home runs and five RBIs in his last two games, including a two-homer, four-RBI performance in Sunday’s defeat. Over his past seven games, Cholowsky is batting .360 (9-for-25) with four homers and seven RBIs.
UC Santa Barbara (27-14) comes off a 6-1 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, dropping two of three in the series. The Gauchos have been strong at home, however, and boast a pitching staff anchored by right-hander Raymond Olivas. The reliever has not allowed an earned run in 7 2/3 innings over his last five appearances, striking out five while surrendering just three hits. Olivas threw three scoreless innings with one strikeout in Sunday’s loss.
The teams met April 14 in Los Angeles, where UC Santa Barbara blanked UCLA 4-0, handing the Bruins their only shutout loss of the season. The Gauchos will try to replicate that success against a UCLA offense averaging 8.2 runs per game.
Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-6 UCLA victory. The Bruins begin a three-game series at Michigan State on Friday, while the Gauchos open a three-game set at Cal State Bakersfield the same day.
