Texas-Arlington at Baylor

WACO, Texas (Interstat) — Baylor first baseman Tyce Armstrong homered twice, driving in two runs, and the Bears defeated Texas-Arlington 6-2 on Tuesday night at Baylor Ballpark.

Baylor improved to 23-21. Texas-Arlington dropped to 16-26. Armstrong went 3 for 4 with his 17th and 18th home runs of the season. He entered the game with three homers in his previous four contests, including a two-homer performance in a loss at Arizona State on Sunday.

Texas-Arlington grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Harold Laracuente walked and advanced to third on a double down the right-field line by Harp. Melendez grounded out to second base, driving in Laracuente, and Harp moved to third. The rally stalled when McAfee flied out to left field.

Baylor answered in the bottom of the second. Catcher JJ Kennett singled to left, advanced to second on a groundout, and moved to third when Sanders walked to load the bases. Left fielder Dylan Perez singled up the middle, driving in Kennett and Riebock, who had walked earlier, tying the game 2-2. Texas-Arlington starter Dylan Skolfield was lifted after 1 2/3 innings, charged with two earned runs on one hit and three walks.

Armstrong put Baylor ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right, his 17th of the season. After Snow walked and stole second, Kennett singled through the right side to score Snow and make it 4-2. Kennett advanced to third on a bunt single by Johnson and a groundout by Garza, then scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Riebock, stretching the lead to 5-2.

Armstrong struck again in the bottom of the sixth, launching his second homer of the game, this one to deep center, to extend the Baylor advantage to 6-2. He went 3 for 4 on the night, with both homers accounting for two runs driven in.

Baylor used six pitchers in the game. Charlie Atkinson, Cade Hansen, Brayden Bergman and Luke McLeod each tossed a scoreless inning. McLeod struck out two batters. Bergman also struck out two. Texas-Arlington reliever Charlie Geise pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and one earned run while striking out one.

The Mavericks managed five hits. Laracuente went 2 for 2 with a double, a walk and a hit by pitch. Baylor collected 11 hits, led by Kennett’s 3-for-3 performance with an RBI. Perez drove in two runs on a single.

The pivotal sequence occurred in the bottom of the second when Baylor erased a two-run deficit with Perez’s two-run single, followed by Armstrong’s go-ahead homer an inning later.

Texas-Arlington had lost three of its previous four games coming into Tuesday. Baylor was looking to bounce back after being swept in a three-game series at Arizona State over the weekend. The teams had met once earlier this season, a 5-2 Baylor win on April 7 in Arlington.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Baylor 4, Texas-Arlington 3, and the ELO system gave Baylor a 71.50 percent probability to win.
