Bethune-Cookman at Florida International

MIAMI (Interstat) -- Bethune-Cookman visits Florida International on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at FIU Baseball Stadium, with the Wildcats aiming to rebound from a series loss while the Golden Panthers seek a second straight win.

First pitch is forecast for 80 degrees with clouds.

Bethune-Cookman (31-13) enters with a powerful resume but comes off a 15-13 loss Sunday at Florida A&M. The Wildcats, led by the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s top offense, have won 10 of their last 13 games. They face a Florida International team (14-29) that snapped a six-game losing streak Sunday by beating Dallas Baptist 13-10.

The pitching matchup will be key. Wildcats junior right-hander Michael Benedict has struggled with command. Over his last four appearances – three on the road – he has allowed 11 earned runs in 12 innings, though he has struck out 13 batters. In his most recent outing Sunday, he allowed three earned runs on no hits and four walks in 3 2/3 innings in a loss to Florida A&M.

Florida International will counter with sophomore right-hander Jeremy Urena, who has been sharp. In his last three appearances, spanning 10 innings, he has allowed three earned runs with 11 strikeouts. He threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings Sunday, scattering four hits and striking out three in the win over Dallas Baptist.

The teams met once this season, with Florida International winning 12-5 on Feb. 17 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Bethune-Cookman’s offense has been explosive. In Sunday’s loss, third baseman Andrey Martinez homered and drove in two runs, and left fielder Darryl Lee had a three-RBI single.

Florida International received a boost Sunday from shortstop Mario Trivella, who homered and drove in three runs, and left fielder Luca Reyes, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs.

The Wildcats have won four of their last five series. After this game, they return home for a three-game set against Arkansas-Pine Bluff starting Friday.

Florida International opens a three-game road series at Delaware on Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-4 victory for Bethune-Cookman.
