North Carolina A&T at Winthrop
PREVIEW: Winthrop Hosts NC A&T Looking to Rebound
ROCK HILL, S.C. (Interstat) — Winthrop’s Walker Brodt looks to build on a dominant relief outing when the Eagles host North Carolina A&T on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Winthrop Ballpark.
The Eagles (28-16) have won 13 of their last 18 games but staggered out of the weekend, dropping a 7-6, 10-inning decision at Gardner-Webb on Sunday. Brodt, a right-handed pitcher, threw 4 2/3 hitless innings in that loss, allowing one earned run while striking out six. The outing was a sharp turnaround for Brodt, who had struggled in recent appearances, including a start April 12 in which he allowed three earned runs in 1 2/3 innings against Presbyterian.
The Aggies (11-31) enter on a four-game losing streak after being swept at home by William & Mary. Sunday’s 9-0 shutout marked the third time in four outings the Aggies have been held to five or fewer runs. North Carolina A&T has dropped nine of its last 10 overall.
Angel Ortiz, a right-hander for the Aggies, will likely be called upon in relief after starting Sunday. Ortiz lasted 5 2/3 innings in the loss to William & Mary, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts. Over his last two outings, he has surrendered 10 earned runs on 17 hits across 8 2/3 innings.
Clear skies are forecast for the first pitch, with temperatures near 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-2 win for Winthrop.
Winthrop continues a stretch of six games away from home after Tuesday, beginning a three-game series at UNC Asheville Friday. North Carolina A&T visits Campbell for a three-game series starting Friday.
