Longwood at Binghamton

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — Longwood and Binghamton conclude a three-game series Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field, with both teams seeking the rubber match after splitting a doubleheader Friday.

The Lancers (25-17) and Bearcats (22-15) opened the series with a pair of games April 24. Binghamton won the opener 10-8, rallying behind a strong relief outing from Jackson Mitchell, who tossed 5.0 scoreless innings. Longwood rebounded in Game 2, winning 7-3 behind a dominant start from right-hander Jaxon Lloyd.

Lloyd, a player to watch for Longwood, threw 6.0 innings of one-hit ball in the victory, striking out six while allowing three earned runs. In his previous three starts, Lloyd has logged 20.0 innings with 16 strikeouts, posting a 4.05 ERA. He went 8.0 innings in a loss against Presbyterian on April 17 and earned a win against UNC Asheville on April 10 with 6.0 innings of work.

For Binghamton, reliever Jake Dally is another key name. The right-hander pitched 3.1 scoreless innings in Friday’s opener, allowing one hit while striking out six. Dally has been a reliable bullpen arm this season, posting scoreless outings in five of his past seven appearances, including 2.0 innings of hitless relief at NJIT on April 5.

The Bearcats (22-15) enter Sunday with momentum from their 10-8 win. Sean Sweeney drove in two runs and went 2-for-2, while catcher Zachary Anderson homered and drove in one. Binghamton also took two of three from Bryant and swept Maryland-Baltimore County in their most recent home series.

Longwood’s offense showed resilience in Friday’s loss. Third baseman Jon Howard homered and drove in two runs, going 2-for-5. The Lancers have won three of their past five games, including a 10-4 victory at VMI on April 21.

The forecast calls for 56 degrees and cloudy skies.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Binghamton victory.

Both teams face nonconference road games Tuesday before starting conference play. Longwood visits VMI, while Binghamton travels to Le Moyne.
