San Diego State at Fresno State
AP Sports Preview
FRESNO, Calif. (Interstat) — San Diego State opens a three-game Mountain West series against Fresno State at Selland Arena on Friday at 6 p.m. The Aztecs (23-18) enter as heavy favorites against the Bulldogs (12-25).
San Diego State brings a potent combination of momentum and pitching depth. The Aztecs have won five of their last six games, including a 4-3 victory at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday. Right-handed pitcher Carson Johnson has been a standout out of the bullpen, posting a 0.00 earned run average over his last four outings. In that span, the reliever has allowed just three hits over 11 innings while striking out 11. Johnson threw three scoreless innings Tuesday.
Fresno State snapped a five-game losing streak Tuesday with a 5-2 win at Long Beach State. Right-hander Erik Rico tossed five innings of one-run ball, scattering no hits and striking out four. Rico has shown flashes of brilliance this season but has struggled with consistency. He holds a 4.91 ERA over his last three appearances.
The Bulldogs have lost 11 of their last 13 games overall. Their pitching staff has been a persistent issue, surrendering double-digit runs in five of their last eight losses.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-3 San Diego State victory.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday. Following this weekend, San Diego State hosts Cal State Fullerton on Tuesday, while Fresno State travels to Cal State Northridge on Wednesday.
