Preview: George Washington at Georgetown

BETHESDA, Md. (Interstat) — Local rivals Georgetown and George Washington meet Wednesday at Shirley Povich Field, with the Hoyas looking to continue their winning momentum against a Revolutionaries squad coming off its best weekend of the season.

First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. EDT under cloudy skies with temperatures near 60 degrees.

Georgetown (22-18) enters with the better overall record and is fresh off taking two of three in a high-scoring series at Butler, capped by a 14-5, 13-inning victory Sunday. First baseman Jeremy Sheffield, a key hitter for the Hoyas, went 4 for 7 with three RBIs in that marathon win.

Sheffield has been inconsistent lately, however, posting hitless games on April 17 and 18 before Sunday’s breakout.

George Washington (16-22) swept a three-game series at Virginia Commonwealth, including a 9-3 win Sunday fueled by a strong start from right-hander Declan Wywoda. The pitcher to watch for the Revs threw six no-hit innings against VCU, allowing two earned runs with four strikeouts.

Wywoda has been a bright spot, having also thrown six no-hit innings in a loss at Saint Bonaventure on April 4.

The Hoyas won the most recent meeting between the teams, 9-8, on March 4 at George Washington. Wednesday’s game is a standalone non-conference matchup before both teams resume their respective league schedules this weekend.

According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Georgetown 6, George Washington 5.

Following this game, Georgetown opens a Big East series at home against Connecticut on Friday. George Washington begins an Atlantic 10 series against Davidson on Friday.
